Day-36: South to Carlsbad for Halloween

Thursday, October 31, 2013

As Willie Nelson would say, "On the road again, ..."

After breakfast we packed our cars and were ready to move on south. Diane and Greg departed Oxnard around 10:00 and we followed about a 1/2 hour later.

Our travel south was via:

We all arrived in Carlsbad by mid-afternoon and soon thereafter the washing began. Over the next two days, there must have been twenty loads moved through the laundry room.

In order to stay out of the way, Greg and I retired to the backyard with a bottle of wine.

Bernie, Carlsbad's resident New Englander, came over and we chatted for an hour or so regarding "the Sox", our travels, his "birthday" travels and of course the upcoming golf.

For dinner, Diane and Greg prepared homemade pizza, more varieties than Papa John's. My favorite was, of course, the pepperoni and sausage, it's about the meat. It was our first home cooked meal in five weeks, mighty good.

To top off the dinner, Diane served some of her homemade ice cream, two flavors, pistachio & chocolate candy-caramel. This was a delight, some of the creamiest ice cream I've had in a long time.

As if the ice cream wasn't enough, and as it was Halloween, Diane brought out the "sweet stuff", a huge basket of M&Ms, Snickers, Twix Bars, Nestle's Crunch Bars, etc. In that they hadn't moved in by Halloween last year, the number of kids expected was a SWAG. In the end it was a good thing that they had bought the big bags, actually two big bags as the kids came in herds, for about two hours. You know the drill, kids ring doorbell, you get up to feed the kids, you sit down and within seconds the doorbell rings again, etc.

The balance of Thursday night was reserved for relaxation. We watched the NFL game with the Dolphins beating the Bengels in OT with a safety, very unusual ending; and then tuned in to the Golf Channel for the HSBC tournament from Shanghai.

Beginning around 9:30 one by one we made our way up the stairs; let there be sleep.
